Untitled Document Stott Pilates: Tweaking the Old

When dancer Moira Stott first tried pilates, she must have been as ecstatic as many. But as time passed, she noticed some tweaking needed to be done for Joseph Pilates’ system to work for her clients in her pilates class. Thus, Stott Pilates was born.

Stott pilates claim that they have made the old method easier and more effective. Moira claimed that her new Stott pilates method has broken down the old exercises into packets, and clients progress from the easiest to the most complicated as they go on. She also says she has made use of recent research in biomechanics, for example modifying pilates’ approach to spine rehabilitation. Instead of extending the spine, Stott pilates advocates that exercises for spinal conditioning be done with the spine in neutral position, so as to help the back absorb the most shock and strain. Stott pilates does this by strengthening the girdle muscles surrounding the spine and pelvis to help keep the spine in neutral position most of the time.

Stott pilates has also changed the old breathing patterns to achieve better results when exercising the abdominal muscles. Exercises and other warm-up preparations are also incorporated in Stott’s pilates to help the body get ready for the more complicated motions. This builds up stability, strength and coordination step-by-step so a client isn’t overwhelmed.

Stott pilates claim that they are the “contemporary approach to the original works of J.H. Pilates.” Moira Stott says they have made changes to the old method to make it safer and more effective. Stott pilates focuses on posture, balance and stability, and works with individual muscles in slow, graceful movements. Moira Stott says that its is hard to work individual muscles if you move too quickly, so Stott pilates slowly builds stability not by fast repetitions but by stretching and exercising slowly but in correct form. It is not about power, it’s about focusing on stability and control which will reap the most results according to the Stott pilates conditioning method.

Stott pilates exercises will help develop strength, flexibility, endurance and will improve posture while also relieving mental anxiety and stress. It will help you focus, and develop a better mind-body connection. Good diaphragmatic breathing, a vital part of Stott Pilates also helps in good blood circulation. The Stott pilates figure ( a lithe one, they say) also is the best figure for long life.

With all these benefits, joining seems to be a no-brainer. But the real Stott pilates lessons come at a rather steep price: about $26 for a group lesson and $58 for individual. You can buy those Stott pilates videos in exercise stores too, but be sure to have expert supervision first from a certified instructor if you are a beginner. In-home training can then be enhanced by machines like the Pilates Reformer and Pilates Cadillac, but that will mean spending big bucks (about $4,000 each.) To get the most out of your pilates exercises, it is advisable to enroll in lessons first before venturing out on your own. As in any exercise, Stott pilates can injure you if you don’t do it properly. To be safe, hire an instructor and consult a physician before embarking on this or any other workout program. Stott pilates can work for you, but be sure to do it properly to get the best results and the most out of your time, money and effort.
